How to grow your business's email list

 – By

Email marketing campaigns are one of the most effective ways to reach existing and new customers. One of the best things about email campaigns is that you are targeting someone who has already shown an interest in your business. For whatever reason they decided to give you their email, meaning they are interested in getting more information about your business or product.

However, according to a study by MailChimp email blasts have an average open rate of only 22%. This means you not only have to work hard to make your emails unique and stand out, but you also must be constantly working to expand your email list. Think about it this way, the more people who receive your email, the better chance you have of someone resonating with the content. Below you will find five helpful tips for expanding your email list.

#1- Shorten the length of lead-capturing forms

People often make the mistake of asking for too much information from a user on a lead-generating form. While it is tempting to collect as much information as possible, forms with too many fields can lead to users giving up before finishing their submission. Keep your form short with two or three questions, then once they have registered you can send a follow-up to learn more about the kinds of content they are interested in receiving.

#2- Create additional content that requires an email address to access

No matter what type of business you are in, it’s important to share information with your followers from time to time. Not only does this help to establish you as an expert in your field, but it also gives you a chance to connect with users who may be interested in a particular topic. While it is important to share some information for free, it can also be beneficial to create additional content that is only accessible by entering an email address. For example, if you are a plumber you could write a post about the best types of faucets for kitchen sinks. Then you could create additional content showing users how to install a faucet. However, in order to access that video, they have to provide their email address. This is a win-win as it helps your business gather more emails, and it helps users learn more about topics they are interested in.

#3- Share previews of your email content on social Media

Another way to raise intrigue in your email blasts is by sharing previews of them on social media. If you are planning to include a new product launch, exciting news, or a special giveaway in your email, preview it on your social media first. This is a great way to not only possibly reach new subscribers, but also give you regular content for your social profiles.

#4- Add an opt-in link to your employees’ signatures

Many organizations have specific email signatures for each employee in their organization.  These signatures often include their name, job title, email address, and business website. A really easy way to generate more email addresses is by adding an opt-in link to each of your employee’s signature lines. This way, if any of your employees are speaking with prospective customers, they can easily add their email to your subscriber list to receive additional content from you.

#5- Utilize traditional marketing

We have said it before and we’ll say it again, don’t underestimate the power of traditional marketing, especially when it comes to increasing your email list. There are many easy ways to collect emails using more traditional approaches. One way is to collect email addresses at a trade show or other networking event. Collecting signups in-person also give you the opportunity to introduce yourself to potential clients. Another way to gather emails is by adding QR codes to any printed materials or digital ads. This way people who see your collateral can easily scan the QR code to subscribe to your email list. You can even set up special tracking to determine how many submissions came from your QR code.
